Itinerary / Highlights

DAY 1, Cheetah breeding project, Kruger National Park

From Johannesburg we travel east into the Mpumalanga and greater Kruger. This afternoon we visit a cheetah rehabilitation centre to see the work done here and to learn a little of these amazing cats. We also have the chance to relax and watch traditional local dancing at our lodge.

DAY 2 - 3, Kruger National Park

This morning we enter Kruger National Park in open game drive vehicles, perfect for wildlife viewing, and game drive our way to our camp deep into the national park. Kruger is home to over 500 species of birds, some 150 species of mammals (including the 'Big Five': leopard, lion, buffalo, rhino elephant) and over 100 species of reptile. We game drive in the park, typically going out in the early morning or late afternoon when wildlife is at its most active and resting up during the middle of the day's heat. There is also the option of taking either an early morning game walk or evening game-drive (both recommended).

DAY 4 - 5, Kruger National Park, Johannesburg

We enjoy final animal sightings as we make our way back to Johannesburg. The next day is free to relax, or (optionally) visit Soweto, or take tour of the Gold Reef mining areas.

DAY 6 - 7, Kingdom of Lesotho

We leave Johannesburg and head south to the mountainous Kingdom of Lesotho. In deeply rural surroundings we explore local villages, meet the Basotho people and experience something of the life of these traditional folk. There is the opportunity to try pony trekking or take guided walks to discover the beauty of the local scenery and culture.

DAY 8, Drakensberg Mountains

After two nights we cross back into South Africa to the Drakensberg Mountains (Barrier of Spears), a 200 km long world heritage site that separates Lesotho from KwaZulu Natal. We have time to explore on foot some of the bushman paintings, waterfalls, cliff faces, forest and riverine bush on nature paths that crisscross this area. We then head for Royal National Park to overnight.

DAY 9 - 10, Royal Natal National Park, Battlefields, Dundee

We enter Royal National Park in the early morning to explore the stunning picturesque surroundings. Highlights here include the Amphitheatre, a 5 km, 100 metre high rock wall, and the Tuglea Falls, the second highest waterfall in the world. We continue to Dundee the gateway to the battlefield sites dating from wars involving the English, the Zulu and the Afrikaaner settlers - Blood River (Zulu/Afrikaaner), Talana Hill (British/ Afrikaaner), and Rorke's Drift (British/Zulu).

DAY 11, Valley of a Thousand Hills, Durban

On our last day we travel through the 'Valley of a 1000 Hills', a stronghold of Zulu villages and culture where we have the chance to learn a little more about this proud warrior culture. Finally we make our way to the Indian Ocean and the beaches and bright lights of Durban.
