11 day Trans Sinai Safari by camel
This is the old Bedouin route, from Serabit El Khadem all the way across South Sinai. Journey from the wide wadis of Rummlah, through the deep canyons of Wadi Arada, all the way to oases near Dahab.
These safaris are incredible journeys that will take you all the way across South Sinai. Desert Divers is uniquely qualified to run these journeys - Said is from Rummlah, so we're taking you to our home, where most of our family still live the traditional Bedouin life.
Highlights:
The trek is divided into 4 main areas:
1. Serabit El Khadem & Rummlah: this area is next to Jebel El Tih - the mountain range dividing north and south Sinai. It is characterized by wide wadis, large rolling dunes and families still living the traditional Bedouin life. We move from one family to the next, enjoying the Bedouin hospitality and getting a real feel for the Bedouin life. en route, there are also terrific sites - the remains of an old Roman school, the Pharonic & Hexus temple Serabit El Khadem, wadis full of acacias & plam trees... & more
2. El Hashem Canyons: 3 deep canyons that join Jebel El Tih to Jebel El Guna. Trekking through the canyons is amazing, and emerging from them to the El Guna Plateau is breathtaking. This area is empty and one of the most remote areas you will ever find yourself.
3. Wadi Arada: From the El Guna Plateau, water floods to Nuweiba in the East or Dahab in the West. We follow the western route, playing on the big dunes, visiting old Bedouin wells and meeting places, and the sites of the Nabateean people.
4. Wadi Hammem: The old 'road' from Arada to Dahab, winding through the sandstone mountains and dotted with palm trees. 'Hammem' means 'shower' - as there are natural showers (waterfalls) here the few times a year it rains.

Example Itinerary:
There are 2 options for this safari:
1. To travel all the way to Dahab by camel
2. To spend more time exploring the central area, then travel by jeep to Dahab on the last day
Day 1: Wadi Feiran - Valley of Inscriptions - Serabit El Khadem, by Landcruiser
We leave Dahab by jeep and travel North West to Wadi Feiran, stopping for tea with the Bedouin families and to explore the oasis.
After tea, we head off road to the Valley of Inscriptions.
Lunch in the Valley of Inscriptions, before continuing through Wadi Makatteb and Jebel Maghara to Serabit El Khadem.
Just before Serabit, we stop at Sheikh Hubos, a special place for the people in this area. Dinner and camp in Serabit.
Day 2: Serabit - Temple of Hathor - Himayir, by camel
After breakfast we climb Mount Serabit to visit the Temple of Hathor. Hathor is an ancient mother-goddess especially associated with music, dance and the arts. She was the goddess of the turquoise miners who discovered the rich veins of Serabit around 3500 BC. The temple is mainly ruins, with excellent examples of engravings made by the minors over thousands of years.
We descend from the temple in time for lunch. Next, our adventure by camel begins! The first leg of the journey is across Rummlah (the sand area) to Himayir - a granite and sandstone rock formation with a high sand dune. Dinner & camp at Himayir.
Day 3: Himayir - Forest of Pillars - El Garaba, by camel
Our morning starts with a walk up the sand dune, then onward to the Forest of Pillars (El Fouga). The pillars are lava, left standing after wind and water eroded the surrounding sandstone. As more erosion occurs, new pillars are slowly revealed. We take the chance to enjoy the views of the plain over lunch, before heading for El Garaba and a beautiful sunset.
Dinner and camp at El Garaba.
Day 4: Wadi Garaba-Bir El Achdar-Wadi Juffa-Ras Zaranig, by camel
Garaba means 'the one from which all others descend', and we spend our morning walking through Wadi Garaba.
Lunch at Bir El Achdar - a Bedouin oasis and garden, literally meaning 'the green well'.
In the afternoon, we head towards Ras Zaranig through Wadi Juffa.
Dinner and camp at Ras Zaranig - the head of the Zaranig canyons.
Day 5: Zaranig Canyons - Wadi Zalagha, by camel
The Zaranig Canyons are 3 deep canyons made of sandstone. When it rains, the water floods from here down to Nuweiba. We spend all of today making our way through the canyons to Wadi Arada
Dinner & camp at the beginning of Wadi Zalagha.
Day 6: Wadi Zalagha - El Gona Plateau, by camel
In the morning, we cross Wadi Zalagha and ascend to the El Gona Plateau. This plateau is 1700m high and stretches for 50km from Ein Khudra, separating the southeast and middle west areas of Sinai.
We spend the rest of the day on this high plateau, enjoying the fantastic views of the St Catherine mountains as well as the mountains back to Dahab and Nuweiba.
We camp at sunset and spend the night in the million star hotel.
Day 7: El Gona Plateau - Wadi Emhamed - ZigZak Canyon - Wadi Arada, by camel
Last views from the Plateau over breakfast, before beginning our descent via Wadi Emhamed and the ZigZak Canyon.
Dinner at Wadi Arada with Fraej's family. Sleep in Wadi Arada.
Day 8: Bir Safra - El Hadudeh sand dune - Mattamir, by camel
We begin the last leg of our safari in Wadi Safra, stopping at Bir Safra (the connecting point of three valleys and an ancient Bedouin meeting place) and El Hadudeh.
El Hadudeh is the largest and most impressive sand dune in southern South Sinai. After a bit of fun rolling down it, we have lunch and relax.
Our afternoon walk takes us to Mattamir - a sandstone mountain that gives us nice shade.
Day 9: Mattamir - Makhrum - Wadi Hammem, by camel
From Mattamir, we walk to the Jebel Makhrum area - a flat region leading to a 1000m sandstone mountain range, including a small mountain with a hole right though it.
Lunch at Makhrum, then begin our descent to Wadi Hammem.
Camp at the start of Hammem.
Day 10: Wadi Hammem, by camel
We spend a wonderful day slowly descending through Wadi Hammem. This is a beautiful wadi, named after the shower that you can get here when the rains come in winter!
We make lunch and tea breaks in Wadi Hammem.
Last night camp in Wadi Hammem.
Day 11: Wadi Hammem - Dahab, by jeep
Breakfast and a short walk to the bottom of Wadi Hammem.
One last tea before we say goodbye to our camels, then a short drive to Dahab.
Option 2: Nawamis & Ein Khudra, then transfer to Dahab
The first 6 days are the same for both options. Things change a bit from day 9:
Day 9: Mattamir - Makhrum - towards Nawamis, by camel
From Mattamir, we walk to the Jebel Makhrum area - a flat region leading to a 1000m sandstone mountain range, including a small mountain with a hole right through it.
Lunch at Makhrum, then head towards Nawamis.
Day 10: Nawamis - Ein Khudra, by camel
Nawamis is a pilgrim burial site in Wadi Haggag. There are 26 stone tombs from around 4000 BC. Why the graves lie together is not known. It is possible that some disaster befell a group of travelers, such as an attack from bandits.
Lunch at Nawamis, and an afternoon walk to Ein Khudra.
We spend our last night in this palm tree oasis.
Day 11: Ein Khudra - Dahab, by camel/jeep
Breakfast, then time to explore the oasis. This is an ancient traditional resting point of both Bedouin and pilgrims on their way to the Nile Delta, Jordan or Jerusalem.
After tea, we make one last walk through Wadi Khudra to the road, for pick up and transfer to Dahab. |
